A Journey Through Time Together

Our Story

Ardgour Holidays is a small family run company offering self-catering accommodation.

We bought Ardgour House and grounds in 1995, having seen the house lists in Historic Scotlands Building at Risk Register. After a programme of repair and adding the swimming pool we opened Ardgour House for self catering holidays in 1996.

Ardgour House, a cherished historic Scottish residence, has stood the test of time offering beautiful surroundings. This remarkable venue combines rich heritage with comfortable amenities, making it perfect for hosting unforgettable retreats, weddings, or family gatherings.

Built in 1765, this imposing country house is offered in its entirety for self-catering holidays. Sleeping twenty-two in eleven bedrooms, it makes an ideal choice for a gathering of family and friends, or work colleagues.

With 10m heated indoor swimming pool, billiard room, games room, TV lounge and large drawing room, it the ideal venue for larger groups all year round.

Unfussy but comfortably furnished, Ardgour House is not pretentious. Being a very old building, it does not pretend to be 'grand'. It offers basic but comfortable accommodation, with excellent facilities, at good value for money, per person per night.

History

The Macleans of Ardgour were granted title to the lands of Ardgour by James IV in 1494 and have owned the estate continuously since then.  At the time of the 1745 uprising the Laird was a minor and a neighbouring Chieftain led the clan at Culloden.  Because of this, and unusually for the West Highlands, the estate was not forfeited in those troubled times and is one of the few where uninterrupted ownership can be traced for nearly 600 years.

The family lived on the site of Ardgour House since 1542 and the cellars of the present building date from that time.

The central portion of the House was completed in 1765.  However it was completely remodelled in late Georgian times and reflects that era.

Although retaining most of the estate, the present Laird sold the House to our family in 1995, allowing it to be upgraded and offered as a unique self catering venue.

It is said that should the waterfall (named Macleans Towel) behind the House dry up, the Macleans will leave Ardgour.
